I actually own the original art of the big splash page. I bought it at Fan Expo a few years ago from Ty Templeton, the artist. He said he'd throw in the small insets page if he could find it, but I guess he couldn't.
Anyway, I've always loved that page, that's why I couldn't resist getting it!

For some of these costumes, you have to place them in the time period in which they were designed. It's certainly unusual, but for it's time it was actually a pretty cool outfit. That being said, I would be interested to see what a newer take on this might turn out to be.

This is the type of character that, if brought back, would need a serious face-lift.

Well, beyond the fact that I never said I hated anything, I'm just giving you a playful ribbing given how much you seemingly loath any change to the Rogues in the New 52.

As long as it's all in good fun... Though honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing a New52 Rainbow Raider myself.

Fair enough. I think I've got my reasons for it.

I understand your reasons. As for RR, I don't think we need to see a major change, just a minor update to fit into present continuity. And, given that the event that created the meta-Rogues has passed, there is no reason we need to see a major change here.

No, what's bad is that I read his bio and all I can see now is Geoff Johns and all his Multi-Color Corps.
So, if Roy is a meta-human now, it's due to the fact that he has the innate ability to access the entire emotional spectrum now.
I suppose that could be a good thing......maybe..........

I have my doubts that Roy would return in any recognizable form, if at all. Manapul and Buccellato have been pretty critical of the Rogues they see as silly, and he almost certainly would fall into that category. So he's unlikely to return, but if he did he'd be very different.

And, given that the event that created the meta-Rogues has passed, there is no reason we need to see a major change here. His power set where he uses color to shift people's emotions can still be used for a solid storytelling technique (though the ability to drain someone's color...sorry, that's just too stupid...maybe revise it to where he blasts someone with a particular beam of light that weakens them and as a side effect, they slowly turn pale the sicker they become). I think the costume would have to be streamlined greatly. I'm sorry, but I can't get behind making rainbows look cool in the striped format. Maybe a long jacket/trench coat of some kind that "blends" the colors together.

Scott Kolins already gave him a trenchcoat and I thought it was ugly. I agree his older costume wouldn't work these days, though. But now that Weather Wizard runs around in a trenchcoat it wouldn't really work for another Rogue.

That article is terrible. The 1960s Rainbow Raider from Superboy was a totally different character -- in fact, it was Pa and then Ma Kent in disguise. The Roy Bivolo Raider was always intended to be a Rogue, and wasn't created until about 1980.

Have to agree that the article missed the mark. Seems like an article that started with a conclusion looking for support...and didn't let a few facts get in the way. It's easy to do...much harder to do the research that gets the facts straight. Thanks to dillonmania for the correction on the "original" Raider in Superboy.
As far as silliness...keep in mind that the whole Silver Age, especially the early years, had a lot of silliness. It was part of mainstream comics as a whole back then. The books were written for a younger audience during a time of heavy industry self-censorship. Some things just need to be taken at face value to be appreciated, and that includes Rainbow Raider. In the right hands today, a Rogue who can master the emotional spectrum could be one of the most powerful and dangerous villains around. If there's one thing I've learned in 45+ years of collecting, it's that ANY character can be awesome in the right hands.

There was actually another Rainbow Raider between the Kents and Roy Bivolo (that guy appeared in Dial H) -- DC really dug the name, I guess. Anyway, it's not that I don't think Roy is silly, because he is. But not every villain has to be a terrifying badass, and as Ed says a) he was created in a different time, and b) he actually could be a terrifying badass. The guy could fly, shoot lasers that blew through stone pillars, mind control people and manipulate their emotions, drain people's energy and blind or sicken them, and turn invisible. I personally love that he's kind of a dork and goofy, and he's pretty popular in Rogues fandom for that reason. I wouldn't expect him to appear in the New 52, and would really prefer he didn't, because I know DC would only use him to kill off or make him gritty and extreme. That would be....depressing. Anyway, Roy is in the Scribblenauts game and that makes me happy
