Finally decided to just give in and try this series. (Excellent review of this issue by the way)
First, I'd like to change my vote. When pics of Jay's new costume were first released, I was on board with others saying the changes looked horrible. However after seeing him in action here in costume, I must say it looks rather good. Like the lightning bolt design that travels along his pant line, the helmet looked good (although the chin strap still looks eh but as with Barry, I'm getting used to it)
It's strange seeing a young Jay. I am used to seeing the gray streaks in his hair, being the wise mentor. Yet I find it intriguing to see him learning on the run now. Also, I have no idea if his mother has ever appeared before in comics, but she seems to take all this in stride, her son being a Wonder, then nearly abducted, and finally absconded to a magical realm.
I also see what you mean about Kalid acting in a similar way to Hal. He could have summoned the power to help Jay instead he uses a very big stick. I like that. He knows that he is destined for this power and it both scares and electrifies him.
About this World Army, are they a publicly-sanctioned force or some top-secret force? Are they hunting down Jay and the others because all Wonders have to work for them?
All together, very good issue with excellent art. I have no idea who Wotan is but I'm definitely aboard for this title now.

Wotan is a long-standing foe of Dr. Fate...although I'm sure there will be a few twists for the New52 versoin. My understanding of the World Army is that they are a truly sanctioned force (but one that obviously takes full advantage of the power given to it). And, like you I think Jay's look has grown on me. If you take this version of Earth 2 at face value, it is a great series. Definitely a "must-read" for me!
