with handling sidekicks. In my opinion Marvel handles sidekicks taking over the heroes costume better. Way better then when said hero returns.
Dick took over being Batman when Bruce was gone. Now Bruce is back and we have two Batmans.
Wally took up The Flash mantle. Barry returns we now have two Flashes.
Captain America dies his sidekick Bucky takes over. Steve Rodgers returns lets Bucky keep the title and goes another route.
Tony Stark gives up Iron Man his friend James Rhodes takes over. Tony Stark returns and Rhodes becomes War Machine.
I don't think we would have to be worrying about Wally being removed or having two of the same heroes running around. If DC took the marvel route and handled the heroes return better.

Yes, but I still think Wally West remains THE single most successful legacy hero. He was Flash for decades now, and elements of his run have become just as iconic as Barry's. As a matter of fact, while Barry still has plenty of time to catch up, I think that the greatest, most epic stories in Flash history currently took place during Wally's run. I think DC handles legacy heroes better, but you're right that Marvel handles the return of the original heroes better. Another good example? Ghost Rider. We have two nearly identical Ghost Riders driving around the Marvel U, and yet Danny and Johnny don't seem to be taking anything away from each other.
I don't think Wally should change his identity when the culmination of his character arc involved getting comfortable in that suit, but I do think DC could find interesting and important things for him to be doing as his own hero instead of Barry's sidekick.

Both of you are correct! I think that the editors at DC get too wrapped up in legacy to think ahead......they're pulling with Wally West in the DCU what they ACTUALLY pulled on Nick Spencer in real life!.....so at least they are being consistent.
[glow=red,2,300]I love DC[/glow] ....and outside of a couple of Image on-goings, I read them exclusively.....but I think they are so scared to try anything new sometimes that when they actually do, they go way OVERBOARD!!
That said, when DC goes with a storyline, they stick with it.....when Barry was sacrificed I was still a child...and when Hal Jordan turned bad, possessed, and then sacrificed, Spectre-ed....it took awhile for DC to admit they were really just scared to kill him off....and then bring him back as Green Lantern.
I had heard from Gotham Knights Online (where I'm a forum member) that originally Grant Morrison wanted to stretch the Grayson-Batman story arc out for a few years before Bruce Wayne's return....but fan reaction was so strong that editorial was fearful and nixed that plan......thank God!
After saying all of that, I originally thought Barry's return would be great, but seeing how it has been done and that Wally West is just being pushed off to the leftovers pile, I wonder if they may be damaging the mythos of one of DC's finest? It felt right with Hal Jordan, it does NOT feel right with Barry Allen.....and I don't really know why? Maybe too forced, I'm not sure...

I think the real issue is not how they treated Barry, but how they treated Wally. I do like what they are doing with the story so far as related to Barry's return...but why does there have to be such a stark choice here? We didn't need to have Wally basically disappear from sight just to make Barry's return legit. In fact, given their history together it would have been far better to keep Wally in the storyline. Hopefully they can address this during and after Flashpoint - at least we can hope...

Not having any flashpoint issues yet (remember I won't actually April issues until end of April!) so don't know how it's progressing, it seems bizarre that Wally wouldn't want to spend lots of time with his idol, flashing around. Doesn't make sense that he'd just kind of be all "barry's back from the dead, I'll catch up with him next week"

I tend to agree that DC has totally botched their handling of Wally as The Flash ever since Infinite Crisis. I didn't really mind that DC had made Bart the Flash... I just didn't like HOW they did it. There was no real passing of the torch like there had been with Barry. It was all hinted at and insinuated. If DC had really been serious about Bart becoming The Flash there should have been a scene in the early issues with Wally effectively telling Bart something to the effect of "You're ready, kid... Besides I've got a family to raise now." The concept of Bart being The Flash was sound, but the execution of that idea was downright awful!
There was an idea that got tossed out back in the 90s-- I think for an Elseworlds graphic novel... The basic gist was that Barry had never died, Wally had never regained his speed and that Dick Grayson feeling largely redundant had retired from costumed crime-fighting.
I think the premise was going to be kind of a pulp-fiction/film noir-esque vibe with Dick and Wally being best friends who team up and open a Private Detective Agency.
Given that Bruce is back and there are currently 2 Batmen-- thus Dick kind of is redundant (unfortunately! I kind of prefer him as Batman over Bruce) and that Barry is back and DC is trying to pretend the past 20+ years of Wally's run as The Flash never happened maybe it's time to dust off this idea and give it a whirl.
