Wasn't Wally kinda/sorta killed by Vandal Savage back in Flash #50? He was then "resurrected" (sort of) by Kilg%re in the very next issue? Or was he merely NEARLY killed by Vandal Savage and only rescued from the cruel hand of death by Kilg%re?
I think that story-arc was my favorite from the Messner-Loebs era.
Speaking of that story arc, where is Vandal Savage these days? He kind of went off into oblivion back in Flash #232 but he's such an interesting rogue... I'd love to see him return in some semblance. He's the Flash's equivalent of Batman's Ra's Al Ghul (have those 2 ever teamed up? I mean a couple of immortals... why not?)

It seemed to me that he was near-death and Kilg%re repaired/healed him. That chip or whatever that he had planted in Wally prevented his total death, or that's what it looked like to me.
I really enjoyed that era too, especially Chunk's stories because he's my absolute favorite underused character.

Yep, just near death. I really enjoyed the 'speed demon' story line just before it. I enjoyed Messner-Leobs whole run to be honest, his use of secondary characters was very good and he made you really care about the other people in Wally's life.

His portrayal of Piper was especially enjoyable and memorable.

Yeah, I liked Mason as well. A kind of surrogate father

That was when he updated the suit. Until then he had been wearing Barry's old suits but When Vandal Savage kidnapped his Mom and his Dog (Mercury) He destroyed all of the Suit making material Barry left for Wally. This I think was really the beginning of Wally's ascent from Fill-in Hero to full-fledged successor. Messner-Loebs was at his best here!
Another Really fun issue is the War of the Gods Tie-in (#55) where Wally teams up with Hermes against Mercury It's absolutely hysterical the way Hermes gets under Wally's skin.

Yep. Messner-Loebs *ahem* run on the Flash was wonderful and has aged remarkably well. Chunk, Piper, Mason, Connie, and Linda. Wally's parents, the McGees, Red & Blue Trinity, Velocity 9. The amount of ideas that came his run is just incredible!!
