What are your thoughts about the "new" DCU coming up? I wanted to add something from the perspective of a much older fan, who lived through most of the silver age and saw it wiped away with Crisis on Infinite Earths.
I grew up with Barry and Wally and Jay, and loved every minute of it. Barry was the JLA, Jay came up in those amazing JLA/JSA crossovers, and Wally was a founder of the Teen Titans...and each was very important to me as a young fan.
When they killed off Barry, I was outraged...I get the heroic nature of his sacrifice, but they had already killed off Supergirl and so many others getting ready for this big change, and I didn't like getting rid of THE key character of the Silver Age (after all, it was Barry's appearance that kicked it all off). But, there was a lot more that changed, and at first I didn't like ANY of it.
- No Earth 2
- No Superman or Batman or Robin of Earth 2
- No Superboy (Connor Kent didn't come along for many years)
- Extremely convoluted explanations for the ages of the JSA'ers and even more convoluted explanations for the Legion of Super Heroes (don't remind me about the Pocket Universe...XD).
In other words, they took everything I had held dear and trashed it. There was even that last issue of Action done by Curt Swan (I have that one bagged and boarded) where we said a rather formal farewell to the Superman we knew, while we just allowed Barry to fade away into what would one day be known as the Speed Force while waiting for Wally to step in at only the Speed of Sound.
By the way, that ticked me off too...I didn't mind Wally taking on the mantle, in fact I thought that was the ONLY good idea...but limiting his speed and coming up with that "I need to eat mega-millions of calories to keep up with my speed" was sort of lame. Thankfully, the Speed Force came along in the storyline and they developed Wally into a GREAT character as the Flash.
All this is to say that I was worried, ticked, and ready to drop DC...just like a lot of folks are talking right now. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of mistakes and missteps along the way while they figured out what to do in a "new" universe. But, they weren't trying to please me, an old fan. They were trying to get new fans, and they did. They got.......you.
And that's good. Hopefully they won't lose you or me, and hopefully they will bring a new generation of fans in. I do think they will make some dumb moves in the process, but I'm hoping that there will be enough good moves that we'll all be pleased with the final result.
I do think that final result needs Wally as much as it needs Barry. And, it needs Bart and Jay, too. Even in a "DCNu", we need these characters.
OK, that's enough blather from me...what's your take? What are your fears and hopes when it comes to DCNu?
